The book selected this year for our annual discussion is Nowhere in Africa by Stefanie Zweig. It is an autobiographical novel about her family’s experience in Kenya during World War II.
Stefanie’s father had been a successful lawyer in a small town in Germany before the Nazi seizure of power. By 1938 like most German Jews they were desperate to leave the country.
They would escape to one of the lesser known places of refuge, Kenya, then a British colony. It is hard to imagine a place more different from their former life. The story examines the difficulty in adjusting to their new life in a very foreign place
